www.TheTechStop.net If you’re a gamer, you know that portability and performance don’t necessarily go together. Sure there have been a few notable efforts in making a mobile gaming platform, but none of them have hit that magic midpoint between price, performance and portability. Gateway wants to change all that with the release of their new P-Series of notebooks. These 10lb monsters packs a massive amount of features normally only found in high-end gaming desktops, and it does it at a price …

orland44football,
That’s not a hardware problem. Check the BIOS and the power saving setting. You want to disallow the “Wake Up” due to LAN or USB activity.

I asked you in a message, not here. The reason was I didn’t know youtube blocks url:s in the posts. I also wrote you a message 5 minutes later (long before you posted this message) that I was wrong and apologized.
If we put everything else aside – you won’t get 24 fps with that laptop with the settings maxed. In max settings AA is included.
Although I do like the thorough overview regarding the specs and appearance.
In the end, if we are helpful, entertaining or provokative in any way, then I consider what we do to be a success. If not, then I thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment.

Listen, I appreciate your input… and believe me when I say that I’ve heard the same complaint many times before… but this is the way that I review. I do this in my free time because I really enjoy playing with good technology. I don’t make a living off of it, nor do any of our production sponsors pay us anything for a good review.
That said, if you look at all of my reviews I have been consistent through the entire series because I don’t review bad products. I have explained several times that I receive many products in the lab. The ones I like (i.e. that I would actually use) I review. The ones that I don’t like get sent back to the manufacturer with a list of the things I found wrong with the product. There are plenty of negative review shows out there. If that’s what you want, then we’re not one of them.
As for the lack of “negatives” — I think I spelled it out pretty clearly in that I mention that this isn’t a notebook for everybody. Like all well-designed products it has a paricular audience. This isn’t going to be your “daily drive” nor should you expect it to last through your cross-country flight. It’s heavy and large. It uses up a lot of battery power.
You also need to remember that this was a review from A YEAR AGO. – Performance is a very subjective thing for those who live outside of benchmarks. My comparison was against other “gaming notebooks” from HP, Alienware, FN, etc. Given all that, I think that the 171 still holds up well even today.
I do stand by the statement that running Crysis at 1920×1080 with max settings was pretty smooth. I don’t know what rig you are using, but this was my experience. — Remeber that I was testing experience, not FPS. 24FPS is all that you need for “smooth motion video” — It may not run up against a quad core a year later, but for its time it was a fantastic machine. At the time, Crysis at max settings was impossible on even a powerful rig. The 171 made it playable. I stand behind that 100%
cardazio,
You’re not blocked. I never block somebody for voicing a dissenting opinion… I have only blocked those individuals who have either written racial slurs, disrespectful or biggotted comments, or SPAM. (And you are clearly not one of those.)
Do you stand by the statement that running Crysis at 1920×1080 with max settings was pretty smooth? In that case, there is no saving you.
2. Crysis at 0xAA in 1680 resolution with a pretty extreme rig (Stationary QX6850 (3 Ghz), 4 GB 1066 mhz, GTX280 ..) had around 37 fps:
Hexus (dot) net is my source. Can’t post links here it seems..
See the “Crysis” page for the fps rates.
No AA at 1920×1080 gave below 33.
What bugs me is that you mentioned nothing negative about it.
cardazio,
A few things….
1. Check the date of the review. This is A YEAR OLD. This was the state of the art last year.
2. Do you have your own benchmarks? Your own experience with the product? Or are you simply talking out your end?
I constantly hear from people like you who take it as fact that since we are sponsored we must somehow be in somebody’s pocket. — If you disagree, great. But we’ve been doing this a long time and I stand behind my reviews.

Fr. Robert
How bias can a review get?
Example: Runs Crysis at max settings in FullHD without anything more than minor problems – Right..
3 GB 667 mhz ram… what the hell…
..SPONSORED..
I am so getting this! =D
i just got this laptop from best buy and it’s true everything is great…but the only problem i found with my notebook is when i try to turn it off it turns back on by itself??? what’s up with that, it’s only a week old? Should I return even though i didn’t get the geek squad warranty?
Mathers3000,
Gateway Computers is owned by Acer Computers. Together they are the #2 seller of laptops and desktops in the world.
Pehaps you mean Gateway PROFESSIONAL which was bought by MPC and filed for bankruptcy a few months ago.

Peace,
Fr. Robert
Gateway has gone under and are undergoing many lawsuits. DO NOT buy as they no longer support the warrenty for their computers.
Please research this company before deciding to purchase. Don’t get screwed by this company that no longer exits.
priest teaching us about computers lol
