www.thetechstop.net KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switches are supposed to make it easier to manage multiple systems from a single workstation. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could pack that same convienence into a laptop? Making it possible to manage severs, desktop and the like without ever having to pack a keyboard/mouse and monitor? On this episode of ‘gadget’ we take a look at the ATEN CS661 Laptop USB KVM Switch. This little device lets you use your computer to manage another simply by linking …

shamman117,
It works the other way around. — A KVM allows you to connect two PCs to a single monitor. If you just want two monitors, see our episodes on DisplayLink products.

good review i like this KVM looks like a usefull product when supporting all os’s good vid Fr. Robert
wasn’t there a not terribly expensive IP based one like the “spider” or something. I’ve looked at the Aten 1 port kvm and it may work but I wanted to look at others before I did it (plus the ATEN one is pretty big to stick in a laptop bag with everything else…. I may still buy a one port IP based one to use.
Hey Chris!
Now now… you’ve worked Interop and that means you HAVE had a situation with plenty of Windows servers.

Hey spikesam71,
Check out the exchange I had with aviadra in the comments for this video. — As I mentioned in the episode, OF COURSE THERE ARE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS, but none of them are as easy to use AND secure as the CS661.
It’s all about getting the right tool for that job. Of course this isn’t an all-in-one, will-replace-all-KVMs solution, but it has a niche in which it is the best possible solution.

Fr. Robert
This is stupid and totally unnecessary you can just use a program that you run on both computers its called Synergy.
In 20 years I’ve never walked into a situation where I needed display/keyboard/mouse and I could install windows software onto a target system. Either the system itself is sick ( in which case you can’t or don’t want to install software) or it was running Novell/*nix/something else. For my business use this is completely useless. Now if it actually had a vga and usb connector(for keyboard/mouse) as input I would probably already have an order in for it
true on the headless servers, but if the sysadmin over at that datacenter doesnt have a trolley (didnt u make a movie about something like that?) with the LCD+keyboard+mouse ready to connect that headless server AND allows u 2 install a program that utilizes a DRIVER (that on pre 2008 gives unlimited permissions) he may as well give u the keys 2 the room because he has no business being there..L0L.. its all good, I get what youre saying..but Id never use it for a production server. Peace
aviadra,
I completely understand your point of view and I share many of your opinions. However, the CS661 doesn’t open any security holes because it’s not accessing the server/PC from the network, but from the USB port.
As for controlling manually… why cary an additional LCD/keyboard/mouse when you already have your laptop? Plenty of servers are run headless, this just gives you another option.

Fr. Robert
Im just saying, if youre already within 5 meters of the controlled PC and youre not opening ports because is a “security hole” you would probably do the controlling manually rather than install any piece of software on your server… which is even a bigger security hole. Again, Im all for a KVM that can transfer files and friendly about it, just not in the business segment.
Dude Robert, this is definitely something that would come in handy as I’ve been using my laptop as a primary linked to another monitor. I now just use my desktop as a tv. But it gets so inconvenient to have all the hardware with it.
Great stuff!!
I think it’s worthless if it’s not wireless
aviadra,
Most data centers that I have put together don’t run either VNC or MSRD. We don’t open those ports because that’s a HUGE security hole. (Instead we use IPKVM’s with SSL access to a web interface.)
But you don’t have to go that far… in the review I mentioned connecting to an office/remote office computer without changing HIS/HER network settings (IP, 802.1x, VPN, etc.)
It’s not HAVING network connectivity, It’s having the right kind.

bryant1316,
Sigh…. I would LOVE to do HD, but the gear is still too expensive for us. I’ve been trying to get a production sponsorship with either Panasonic or Sony, but their budgets are just as tight as ours. — In this case the rule of thumbs is to spend as little as possible during the recession so that we can come out the other side as healthy as possible.
Besides… do you really want to see my fat ass in High Definition?
.
Peace,
Fr. Robert
IMO if u have 2 install something on the PC that is being controlled to use it, its all the same to just configure (unpopular program from MS alert) Remote Assistance if u dont want to install anything and VNC if u r willing. I mean come on… what possible environment especially a datacenter one doesnt have network connectivity. The only add bonus I see for this USB KVM over a normal one is the ability to move files. Other than that use RDP, Remote Assistance or VNC over the network IMHO.
When are we going to get Gadget in HD?
great review
I just bought this KVM…it was only $80 online.
Niceee!!!!
adsads3,
The selling point of the CS661 is convienence. All the hardware/software is contained in a single package that makes it easy to manage a remote system without extensive setup or configuration.
With the CS661 you don’t worry about IP addressing, firewalls, etc. Sure you could use less expensive methods, but the question is “is it worth you time?”
Peace,
Fr. Robert
